Looking for fun ways to teach geography without spending hours planning and prepping?
Whether you're introducing the Five Themes of Geography, reviewing map skills, or practicing geography vocabulary, these five activities will get your students thinking, creating, and moving.
And because we all love a good freebie, I've included a FREE, ready-to-use Geography Fact Hunt that you can grab and use right away!
Sometimes the easiest way to make a lesson more engaging is to get students out of their seats!
For this activity, post geography facts around your classroom. Give students a recording sheet and let them travel from fact to fact, collecting information as they go.
Students can review everything from the Five Themes of Geography to map types, latitude, longitude, and map elements.
I actually created this activity for my husband, who teaches sixth-grade social studies. He needed an easy way for his students to review geography concepts, and I figured other teachers might appreciate it, too!
The free download includes 20 geography fact cards, student recording sheets, a lesson plan, completed notes, and a geography word search.

It's a great review activity, and it's also perfect for those days when you need an easy substitute lesson!
2. Doodle Geography Vocabulary
Who says geography vocabulary practice has to mean copying definitions? Get students thinking creatively by having them turn geography terms into doodles!
For example:
Movement: Draw arrows showing people or goods traveling.
Region: Sketch places that share a common characteristic.
Latitude: Draw a globe with horizontal lines.
Human-environment interaction: Illustrate a dam, farm, or bridge.
Students can add a short definition to each illustration to reinforce their understanding.
Want to skip the prep? My ready-made Geography Vocabulary Doodle & Do resource includes 50 geography vocabulary words, making it easy to combine vocabulary practice with creativity!
Quick tip: Have students swap doodles with a partner and see if they can identify the vocabulary words without looking at the labels!
Put those map skills to work with a quick game!
Present students with real-world situations and challenge them to identify the best type of map for each task.
Try these:
**You're planning a hiking trip and want to see mountains and rivers. (Physical map)
** You need to identify the borders between states. (Political map)Students can hold up answers, write them on mini whiteboards, or discuss their choices with a partner.
Make it a challenge: Have students create their own map scenarios for classmates to solve!
This geography activity combines creativity with map skills!
Tell students they've discovered an uninhabited island, and it's their job to create the very first map.
Their maps must include:
- A creative island name and map title
- At least five physical featuresGive students paper and colored pencils, and let their imaginations take over!
Extra challenge: Have students write a few sentences explaining how people might adapt to the island's environment.
Turn the Five Themes of Geography into a guessing game! Choose a mystery location and reveal clues one at a time.
For example:
Clue 1: I'm located in the northeastern United States.
Clue 2: I'm known for my skyscrapers and busy streets.
Clue 3: People travel here from all over the world.
Clue 4: I'm home to the Statue of Liberty.
Answer: New York City!
After a few rounds, challenge students to create their own mystery locations using clues about location, place, region, movement, or human-environment interaction.
